#20160903 - BCom 2nd year studying in Chennai college

This college student lost her father seventeen years ago. Her mother, working as a daily wage labourer, managed to help her daughter complete schooling and even enrolled her in college. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the responsibility of being the head of household has suddenly fallen on the girl, who has a younger brother to care for.

The girl has found a small place to rent at a cost of Rs. 2,000 in a distant suburb of Chennai. She works part-time in a garment store every evening till 9 p.m., drawing a monthly salary of Rs. 3,000. She is keen to continue with her college education as she knows it is the first step toward better employment and getting out of poverty.

Her younger brother is not yet 18, so is unable to take up a formal job. He occasionally works as an electrical assistant and makes about Rs. 150 a day. He dropped out of ITI education because he could not pay the fees and needed to work part-time.

The girl, who is now in her second year of B.Com course, needs assistance paying the college fees.
